According to the ATSDR
(Agency for Toxic Substances Registration and Disease) in the United
States, formaldehyde causes irritation of the tissue when in direct
contact with it. The most common symptoms are irritation of the eyes,
nose, throat and watery eyes, what happens to air concentrations of
0.4 mg. A formaldehyde concentration of 20mg is immediate danger to
health and life. Spilling a concentrated solution of formaldehyde on
the skin may cause irritation.
Some studies of humans
exposed to lower amounts of formaldehyde in the air in their workplace
found cases of cancer of the nose and throat. The Department of Health
and Human Services (DHHS) has determined that it is reasonable to
predict that formaldehyde is carcinogenic to humans. The International
Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and EPA have determined that
formaldehyde is carcinogenic to humans.
